Guru Gobind Singh Ji & Mata Jito Ji Wedding History: The Sacred Story of ‘Guru Ka Lahore’
Today, we are exploring the divine and historical significance of the Anand Karaj (Marriage) of the Tenth sikh guru with Mata Jito Ji (later known as Mata Ajit Kaur Ji) and the establishment of the holy city ‘Guru Ka Lahore’.
Why was ‘Guru Ka Lahore’ Established? (ਗੁਰੂ ਕੇ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ)
The father of Mata Jito Ji, Bhai Harjas Bhikkhi Ji, had a deep desire that Guru Sahib should bring the wedding procession (Baraat) to Lahore. However, after the martyrdom of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, the political situation with the Mughals was very tense, making it unsafe to travel to Lahore.
To honor the feelings of the Sangat and the family, Guru Sahib made a divine declaration: “We will establish a ‘New Lahore’ right here near Sri Anandpur Sahib.” This led to the creation of Guru Ka Lahore, located about 12 km from Anandpur Sahib.
The Miracles of Holy Water: Gurdwara Triveni Sahib (ਤ੍ਰਿਵੈਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਕੌਤਕ)
As the Baraat arrived at the site, there was a severe shortage of water for the horses and the Sangat. A humble Dhobi (washerman) requested Guru Sahib for water to wash the Guru’s clothes.
Seeing the need, Guru Sahib used his Barchha (Spear) and struck the ground. Miraculously, a stream of fresh water burst forth. At the request of Mama Kirpal Chand Ji, Guru Sahib struck the ground twice more, creating three streams representing the unity of three waters. Today, this spot is known as Gurdwara Triveni Sahib.
Another miracle occurred when Guru Sahib’s horse struck its hoof (Paur) on the ground, and another spring appeared. This sacred spot is preserved as Gurdwara Paur Sahib.
The Sacred Anand Karaj: 21 June 1677 (ਪਾਵਨ ਆਨੰਦ ਕਾਰਜ)
The wedding ceremony took place on 21 June 1677 (Asaarh 23, 1734 Bikrami). It was a simple yet spiritually profound ceremony.
- The Lavan: The Lavan (Wedding Hymns) were recited by Baba Ram Koer Ji (the great-grandson of Baba Buddha Ji), also known as Baba Gurbaksh Singh Ji.
- The Family: Mata Jito Ji was blessed with three sons—Sahibzada Jujhar Singh Ji, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh Ji, and Sahibzada Fateh Singh Ji.
Spiritual Lessons for Today (ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਈ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼)
This historical event teaches us the importance of Gurmukh Grahasti Jeevan (Spiritual Householder Life). Guru Sahib showed us that:
- Simplicity over Show-off: Instead of lavish palaces and expensive arrangements, the focus should be on the Guru’s Shabad and Kirtan.
- Respecting Sangat’s Wishes: Guru Sahib established a whole city just to fulfill the emotional and spiritual request of a devotee.
