The Sacred History of Dusht Daman & Chandi Mata: A Divine Connection
Today, we explore the deep spiritual connection and the divine mission that led to the birth of the Tenth Master, Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
The Prophecy and the Power of Ardas
This historical account takes us back to the time of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. It is said that a learned Pandit, an expert in astrology, once visited the Guru’s court. After observing the destiny of Mata Gujri Ji, he shared a prediction that according to the stars, she was not destined to have a child.
However, the Ninth Master, Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, gave a profound message to the world: “Through Gurbani and Ardas, one can rewrite their own destiny.” He assured Mata Ji that a great warrior and a spiritual giant (Mahabali Yoddha) would be born from her womb—a son who would protect righteousness (Dharma) and change the course of history forever.
The Legend of Rishi Dusht Daman at Hemkunt Sahib
To understand why the divine power sought the protection of Guru Sahib, we must look into the Bachittar Natak, where Guru Gobind Singh Ji describes his previous life. On the icy peaks of Hemkunt Sahib, a great ascetic known as Rishi Dusht Daman was immersed in deep meditation (Tapasya).
In the ancient times of Satyug, when the forces of evil (demons) became uncontrollable and the deities (Devtas) were defeated, the divine power Bhagwati (Chandi) fought a long and tiring battle. Seeking a place of ultimate purity and strength, the divine power arrived at the spot where the Rishi was meditating.
The Manifestation from the Tiger Skin
The story reaches a pivotal moment when the demons tried to disturb the Rishi’s meditation. As a response to the divine command and to protect righteousness, the Rishi let out a powerful roar (Oankar). He was seated on a tiger skin (Sher di Khal).
As the skin was shaken, a magnificent warrior—a reflection of the Rishi’s own spiritual light—manifested to defeat the demons. Witnessing this unparalleled bravery and spiritual radiance, a sacred vow was made: that this divine power would always remain at the service of the Guru’s Panth whenever called upon to uphold Truth and Justice.
The Birth at Patna Sahib: A Divine Plan
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji explained that the choice of Patna Sahib for the birth of the Tenth Guru was a part of a much larger, divine plan. It was a location with an ancient spiritual connection. Guru Gobind Singh Ji mentions in his own words: “Dvai te Ek Roop Hve Gayo”—meaning he had become one with the Almighty through his intense meditation at Hemkunt Sahib. It was only upon the direct command of Akal Purkh that he took birth in this world to establish the Khalsa Panth.
