Dhanvantari Vaid: The 17th Avatar in Sri Dasam Granth and the Origin of Ayurveda
In the sacred compositions of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib, the Tenth Master, Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, detailed the various manifestations (Chaubis Avatar) that appeared throughout history to guide humanity. Among these, the 17th manifestation is that of Dhanvantari Vaid, the divine physician who brought the gift of Ayurveda to a suffering world.
The Emergence of Disease in Human History
According to the historical accounts found in the Dasam Granth, there was a time when humanity began to move away from physical labor and a natural lifestyle. As people became consumed by luxury and the consumption of heavy, spicy, and unhealthy foods for mere sensory pleasure, their bodies began to weaken.
For the first time, various ailments and diseases began to plague the human race. Seeing the world in pain and agony, the Divine Command (Hukam) led to the manifestation of Dhanvantari, tasked with teaching humans the secrets of health and nature.
The Churning of the Ocean and the Gift of Ayurveda
The appearance of Dhanvantari Vaid is traditionally associated with the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean). He emerged from the depths of the ocean holding the Amrit Kalash (the pitcher of nectar) and the profound knowledge of Ayurveda.
He taught that nature provides a cure for every ailment. By understanding the properties of roots, leaves, and minerals, Dhanvantari showed that a person could maintain a balanced life. His teachings became the foundation of traditional medicine, emphasizing that “prevention is better than cure.”
The Spiritual Duel: Dhanvantari vs. Takshak the Serpent
A famous legend described in the Dasam Granth involves the rivalry between Dhanvantari Vaid and the powerful serpent king, Takshak. It was destined that Takshak would bite King Parikshit, but Dhanvantari, fueled by his healing powers, set out to save the King.
To test the Vaid’s power, Takshak bit a massive green tree, turning it into a pile of ash instantly with his venom. Unfazed, Dhanvantari used his spiritual mantras and herbal knowledge to restore the tree to its full, green glory within moments. Recognizing that he could not fulfill his destiny as long as this healer was alive, Takshak decided to use deception.
The Final Departure and the Lost Wisdom
Takshak disguised himself as a wooden staff (stick). Unaware of the trap, Dhanvantari picked up the staff. When he used it to scratch an unreachable spot on his back—where his own healing gaze could not reach—Takshak bit him.
Realizing his time was near, Dhanvantari instructed his 72 disciples to consume his remains so that his entire medical wisdom could be transferred to them. However, through further deception by Takshak, the disciples were misled, and the body was cast into a river. While much of the secret, supernatural healing knowledge was lost to the water, the core principles of Ayurveda remained behind to serve as a blessing for all of humanity.
