How Guru Har Rai Ji Saved Dara Shikoh | The Healing Legacy of Kiratpur

The Healing Grace of Guru Har Rai Ji: The Miraculous Recovery of Dara Shikoh

Sikh history is filled with examples of selfless service and compassion, even toward those who once stood as enemies. One of the most profound accounts is that of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji, the Seventh Guru, who established a unique legacy of healing and spiritual guidance at Kiratpur Sahib.

Today, we explore the historic event of how Guru Ji saved the life of the Mughal Prince, Dara Shikoh, and the spiritual lessons that followed.

The Legend of Bhai Bhagtu Ji

The video begins by honoring the great Gursikh, Bhai Bhagtu Ji. A symbol of humility and devotion, Bhai Bhagtu Ji served the Guru’s house through generations. He was instrumental in spreading the light of Gurbani in the Malwa region. Guru Har Rai Ji held him in such high regard that when Bhai Bhagtu Ji passed away, Guru Sahib personally performed his last rites, stating that Bhagtu was like a son to the Guru’s house.

Kiratpur Sahib: A Hub of Healing

Guru Har Rai Ji was known for his love for nature and humanity. At Kiratpur Sahib, he established a world-renowned dispensary (Dawakhana). This center provided free medicines and treatment to the poor and needy, regardless of their background. People traveled from far and wide to receive the Guru’s healing touch and herbal remedies.

The Plot Against Dara Shikoh

The Mughal Empire at the time was rife with internal conflict. While Shah Jahan’s eldest son, Dara Shikoh, was known for his Sufi leanings and kind nature, his brother Aurangzeb was ambitious and cruel. In a bid to clear his path to the throne, Aurangzeb conspired to poison Dara Shikoh.

He managed to have tiger whiskers mixed into Dara Shikoh’s food. The sharp whiskers severely damaged the prince’s digestive system. He became bedridden, unable to digest any food, and even the most skilled royal physicians (Hakims) failed to cure him.

Shah Jahan’s Plea and the Guru’s Mercy

When all hope was lost, the Hakims informed Shah Jahan that the only cure was a rare combination of large Harar (Myrobalan) weighing nearly 14 ounces and a specific Gaja Moti (Elephant Pearl). They stated that such rare items could only be found in the dispensary of Guru Har Rai Ji.

Despite the previous hostilities between the Mughal throne and the Sikh Gurus (especially during the time of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji), Shah Jahan wrote a humble letter to Guru Har Rai Ji, pleading for his son’s life. Showing the true spirit of “Sarbat da Bhala” (Blessings for All), Guru Ji immediately sent the rare medicines. He remarked that when someone comes for protection or help, the Guru’s door is always open.

Dara Shikoh’s Spiritual Awakening

Upon taking the medicine, Dara Shikoh made a full recovery. Grateful for his second life, he visited Kiratpur Sahib to thank Guru Har Rai Ji personally. While his physical ailment was cured, Dara Shikoh felt a deep restlessness in his soul.

He asked Guru Ji, “How can I find spiritual peace?” Guru Har Rai Ji enlightened him, explaining that just as sandalwood perfumes the trees around it, the Sadh Sangat (Holy Congregation) transforms a restless mind into a peaceful one. He taught that God resides in everyone, and the path to peace is through love, humility, and the remembrance of the Divine.
