The Power of Pure Devotion: When Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Met Mai Sirkhana
In the history of the Sikh Gurus, there are countless stories that remind us that the Divine is not moved by gold, jewels, or high status, but by the simplicity of a pure heart. One of the most heart-warming accounts from the life of the Sixth Master, Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, is his encounter with an elderly woman named Mai Sirkhana.
A Soul Awakening to the Truth
Mai Sirkhana was an elderly lady who had spent her life fulfilling her worldly duties. As her children grew up and got married, she began to reflect on the purpose of human life. After hearing about the glory of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji from a Gursikh, she realized that to break free from the cycle of births and deaths, one must seek the refuge of a true Master.
Inspired by the teachings, she began to practice the Mool Mantar constantly. Her heart became so filled with love for the Guru that she decided she must see him and offer something made with her own hands.
The Labor of Love: Preparing the Offering
Mai Sirkhana didn’t have great wealth, but she had immense faith. She went to her fields and personally picked the finest cotton. She had it cleaned and spun into yarn, then went to a weaver to have a simple Khaddar (coarse cotton) cloth prepared.
Alongside this, she prepared a humble meal—paranthas with fresh butter and sugar. To her, these were not just items; they were tokens of her soul’s longing.
The Inner Struggle: Humility vs. Hesitation
As she traveled to meet the Guru, who was then staying at Daroli Bhai in the Malwa region, a wave of doubt hit her. She saw kings and wealthy merchants arriving with expensive gifts—horses, gold, and precious gems.
She looked at her simple Khaddar cloth and her home-cooked paranthas and felt ashamed. “Who am I, a poor old woman, to offer this to the Master of Miri and Piri?” she thought. She stopped by a wall on the path, hesitant to enter the royal-like court of the Guru, praying silently for him to accept her humble gift.
The Guru’s Divine Response (Antarjamta)
Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the Antarjami (Inner-Knower), felt the pull of her devotion. Suddenly, in the middle of a large congregation, he stood up, mounted his horse, and rode out at great speed. The Sangat was surprised, wondering where the Guru was heading in such a hurry.
Guru Ji reached the spot where Mai Sirkhana was standing with her eyes closed in prayer. He called out, “Mother, open your eyes! We are hungry. Where is the food you prepared for us?” Mai Sirkhana was overwhelmed with joy and tears. The Guru, who was offered 36 types of royal delicacies every day, sat there and ate her simple paranthas with great relish. He also graciously accepted the Khaddar cloth she had made, showing the world that the Guru belongs to the humble and the sincere.
The 9 Signs of Divine Love (Preme Di Nishanian)
The video beautifully explains the spiritual concept of the “Nine Signs of Love” that a true devotee experiences:
- Cold Sighs: Deep longing for the Divine.
- Paleness: The physical effect of intense spiritual yearning.
- Tears of Vairag: Crying in the remembrance of the Lord.
- Speaking Less: Turning inward rather than outward.
- Eating Less: Losing interest in worldly tastes.
- Sleeping Less: Staying awake in meditation.
- Constant Waiting: Always looking for the Master’s arrival.
- Restlessness: A soul that cannot find peace without the Divine.
- Contemplation: Deep focus on the Creator.
Mai Sirkhana exhibited these signs, and her “Ardas” was heard because it came from a place of total surrender.
