The Eternal Companion: Bhai Mardana Ji’s Last Moments & Divine Bond with Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Sikh Itihas mein Bhai Mardana Ji ka naam sunehri aksharon mein darj hai. He was the longest companion of Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, serving him for nearly 54 years with his soulful Rabab. Today, we delve into the deeply emotional and spiritual account of Bhai Mardana Ji’s final days and his last conversation with the Great Master.

A Bond Beyond Words (ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਦਾ ਅਟੁੱਟ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ)

Bhai Mardana Ji was not just a companion but a devoted Sikh, a Rababi, and a soulmate to Guru Nanak Dev Ji. During their long travels (Udasis), Bhai Mardana Ji witnessed lands and miracles that no ordinary human could reach. He often said, “Maharaj, the world listens to you, but you listen to me.” Such was the depth of their friendship.

While they were in Baghdad, a moment of longing for home arose in Bhai Mardana Ji’s heart. Guru Sahib, being Antarjami (all-knowing), sensed this and offered to send him home instantly. However, Bhai Mardana Ji’s love was so profound that he replied, “I will only go where you go; without you, I am home nowhere.”

The Divine Prophecy (ਅੰਤਿਮ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਸੋਝੀ)

Guru Nanak Dev Ji then shared a hard truth: “Mardania, you will leave this world before us.” He assured him that his cycle of birth and death had been severed forever—he was now Jivan Mukt (liberated while alive).

Hearing this, Bhai Mardana Ji, with total surrender, asked how much time he had left. Guru Sahib revealed that only five days remained. Instead of fear, Bhai Mardana Ji’s only concern was: “Maharaj, will you be with me when I take my last breath?” Guru Sahib promised, “We will be right by your side.”

The Final Journey to Khurampur (ਅੰਤਿਮ ਵਿਦਾਇਗੀ)

As the five days approached, they moved towards a place called Khurampur (in modern-day Afghanistan). On the final day, Guru Sahib fed him his last meal with his own hands. As the sun began to set, they sat in an open field outside the city.

Bhai Mardana Ji shared that his spiritual knots (Ganth) had opened. With his head placed in Guru Sahib’s lap and his eyes fixed on the Master’s radiant face, he peacefully left his mortal coil. His death was as effortless as an elephant dropping a garland of flowers from its neck.

The Last Rites by Guru Sahib (ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਸਸਕਾਰ)

In a rare and divine honor, Guru Nanak Dev Ji personally performed the last rites of Bhai Mardana Ji. Despite various historical debates, most scholars agree that Guru Sahib cremated his body with his own hands, showing the world the immense respect he had for his beloved companion. While the pyre burned, Guru Sahib and Bhai Bala Ji sat nearby, reciting Gurbani and remembering the magic of Mardana’s Rabab.

Legacy of the “One Who Does Not Die” (ਮਰਦਾਨਾ: ਜੋ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰਦਾ)

Born in 1459 at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi to Bhai Badra Ji and Mata Lakho Ji, his childhood name was ‘Dana’. His mother used to call him ‘Marjana’ (one who dies) because her previous children hadn’t survived. But Guru Nanak Dev Ji changed it to ‘Mardana’, blessing him with the word: “You will never die in the hearts of the Sangat.” Today, whenever Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s name is taken, Bhai Mardana Ji’s name follows as the heartbeat of the Guru’s Kirtan.
