The concept of Takht, which literally means “throne,” is central to the Sikh faith. In Sikhism, there are five Takhts that serve as the seats of spiritual and temporal (worldly) authority for the Khalsa Panth. These are the places where important decisions regarding the community are made.
1. Akal Takht Sahib (Amritsar): Established by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji in 1606, it is the oldest and highest seat of authority. It stands directly opposite the Golden Temple.
2. Takht Sri Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo): This is where Guru Gobind Singh Ji stayed and prepared the full version of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
3. Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib (Anandpur Sahib): The birthplace of the Khalsa, where Guru Gobind Singh Ji initiated the first Panj Pyare in 1699.
4. Takht Sri Patna Sahib (Bihar): The birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It is a major center for Sikhism in Eastern India.
5. Takht Sri Hazur Sahib (Nanded): The place where Guru Gobind Singh Ji spent his final days and passed the Guruship to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
